Flathead Electric Cooperative, Community Solar Project, Phase III

Phase III of Flathead Electric’s Community Solar Program was designed to deliver clean, reliable electricity at a lower cost to cooperative members in the area.

Developed in partnership with the City of Whitefish, the project comprises 448 solar panels capable of generating 200 kilowatts (kW) of carbon‑free electricity, which can power about 21 average-sized homes. The project pairs distributed solar generation and battery energy storage, enabling the system to store excess solar energy produced by the panels and discharge it during times of peak usage. This in turn reduces the overall electrical load and increases reliability.

The scope of work for the Cushing Terrell team included comprehensive design and engineering services, site preparation, installation of solar modules and related equipment, and construction inspection.

The project focuses on delivering maximum return on investment for participating members by enhancing kWh generation throughout its lifespan, all while maintaining cost efficiency. Income-qualified Flathead Electric members who choose to participate in the program will receive “solar credit,” which can reduce the cost of their monthly bill by roughly $3-$5 per month or $36-$60 per year.

System Configuration:

  • 200kW Solar
  • 200kW/660kWh BESS
