Billings Clinic Helmsley Regional Operations Center

The Helmsley Regional Operations Center (ROC) at Billings Clinic represents the culmination of a decade-long vision to enhance efficiency, collaboration, and patient care by co-locating key departments. This vision expanded with the integration of Logan Health, resulting in a dynamic facility that not only supports internal hospital functions — such as bed board, patient placement, and call center operations — but also provides critical infrastructure for regional affiliates.

The ROC houses a comprehensive suite of support services for the region, including a new transfer center, flight and ground transport teams, telehealth, video patient monitoring, remote telemetry, and education spaces designed to foster the adoption of new technologies and services.

Cushing Terrell’s design intent was to create a state-of-the-art environment centered on patient care and operational excellence. Within the ROC, teams work around the clock, supporting the entire Billings Clinic system. The design balances the need for visibility and energy with the imperative to protect staff focus and sensitive patient information. A perimeter hallway wraps the ROC, offering controlled access, education spaces, touchdown offices, and flexible meeting rooms. This hallway is transformed by a mural that celebrates the region and honors the Helmsley Foundation’s pivotal support.

Inside the ROC, staff are constantly coordinating patient care, making acoustic control a top priority. The lower-level location presented challenges with daylighting and ceiling heights, which were addressed through meticulous acoustic calculations. Felt baffles are tucked between structural beams, and acoustic ceiling tiles are strategically placed throughout the space. Additional wood perforated panels at the front of the room enhance both aesthetics and acoustic performance, helping to control noise reverberation near the wall of monitors.
