Benefis Sletten Cancer Institute

The Sletten Cancer Institute, originally designed by Cushing Terrell in 2004, has long served as a beacon of healing for the community of Great Falls, Montana, providing state-of-the-art cancer treatment. Nearly two decades later, the 28,000 sq. ft. facility required an update to accommodate the evolving needs of its patients. The primary goals of the remodel were to modernize room layouts and address space constraints in the infusion center.

The client aimed to increase patient capacity and introduce new amenities to users of the space. The original design catered to individual providers, but the organization is now transitioning to in-house care teams, leaving many areas underutilized and inefficient. By redesigning these spaces, the team expanded the infusion area and introduced new quality-of-life upgrades to the center. These include: a teaching kitchen, a micro-market, a lounge for infusion patients, and a genetic counseling department, which is a brand-new service at the Sletten Cancer Institute. The addition of genetic counseling necessitated a dedicated entrance, waiting room, counseling spaces, and offices — all achieved through a thoughtful design strategy to enhance the original layout.

In addition to these changes, the existing pharmacy required upgrades and expansion to comply with upcoming code adjustments. The project was done in phases in order to keep the existing pharmacy operational while constructing a new, centrally located facility.

Beyond spatial improvements, the team focused on enhancing the patient and user experience, from the moment people enter the building. The lab was relocated near the front entrance for easier access, and wayfinding was improved with more obvious entry points to the building and updated signage. All these changes were made while preserving the original indoor healing garden, which remains a delightful centerpiece of the Sletten Cancer Institute. The garden features donor recognition elements, a decorative water fountain, and lush plant life. All of this was integral to the new design. Cushing Terrell focused on seamlessly blending old and new elements.

By allowing the colors and design elements of the healing garden to guide the renovation, the design team maintained the warm, healing atmosphere established two decades ago, while incorporating a modern touch. This thoughtful design strategy ensured a fluid integration of existing and fresh spaces, preserving the institute’s legacy of care and innovation.
