#Eweek2026 Spotlight | Jacquelyn Castro

Reaching for the stars in engineering

For National Engineers Week 2026, we’re sharing stories from Cushing Terrell’s engineering talent to learn more about how they chose their profession and what makes them tick.

What is your area of expertise and why did you choose it?

Throughout college, I enjoyed thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer. I enjoyed it so much that I picked an educational focus in these areas of study. I was not sure where it would land me, but when I learned more about refrigeration engineering, it was a perfect fit for my interests. It encompasses thermos/fluid dynamics and heat transfer. I was not aware how in-depth grocery store refrigeration systems were and have enjoyed discovering more about it and putting them together like a puzzle in my mind.

What is one of your favorite projects and why?

One of my favorite projects I have worked on was for Albertsons, located in Monument, Colorado. For this project, I updated the equipment for the motor room and on the roof. This was a challenge and took some time to find a design that would work well, fit well, and make the client happy. After it was installed, I was able to be there for the commissioning of the project and see how it all come together. By having the chance to see the whole project, it allowed me to further grow into my role as a designer and engineer.

What are your defining characteristics?

I am very extroverted, for an engineer, which has led me to become a cultural ambassador, and make some great connections with our clients. I am also very family oriented, hardworking, and enjoy a challenge.

What piece of advice would you give a young person interested in becoming an engineer?

Enjoy what you do. Make a priorities list, list out your values, and you can find a job in the field of your dreams.
