Wachholz Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center

The Wachholz Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center (WIEC) at Flathead Valley Community College (FVCC) is a hub for all types of entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey. From students just getting started to experienced business owners, WIEC offers education, strategic support, and a network of mentors and partners to help foster a strong and resilient entrepreneurial ecosystem in northwest Montana.

As a design partner for the college, Cushing Terrell was brought on to support the remodel of what was previously an early childhood education center into the innovation and entrepreneurship center. The goal was to transform the base learning spaces into an environment suited for college and professional business use.

For the interior design, the team created a visual identity focused on ideation, adventure, movement, angles, energy, and inspiration from the surrounding landscape. With a color palette of blues, greens, greys, and browns, the interior spaces promote an expansive, “sky’s the limit” feeling with angled elements and a variety of textures to further these ideas.

For the Wachholz Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center, Cushing Terrell worked with the client to transform early childhood learning spaces into an environment that would support both students and the business community with meeting and conference rooms, smaller breakout spaces, and even a room for video and podcast productions.

To support technology needs, the team added data and outlet connections as well as a media room to support video and podcast productions. The room was designed with a green screen and other backdrops as well as a rail system for lighting.

For the exterior of the building, the team updated the facade of the building to match the aesthetics of the other buildings on the FVCC campus. The renovation included a full replacement of all windows and new siding with wood-reminiscent aluminum cladding details and a new entryway canopy to add visual interest and emphasize a modern, yet welcoming environment.

The WIEC project was funded by Paul D. Wachholz, the same donor who supported the adjacent Wachholz College Center, which was designed by Cushing Terrell and completed in 2022.
