Three Rivers Bank

Three Rivers Bank, a returning client, contracted Cushing Terrell for the design of a new branch in Whitefish, Montana. Their current branch locations in Kalispell have strong brand identity with steep, A-frame roof designs. The client wanted to maintain that staple, but in a contemporary design that fit in with the fast-growing community. The result was a steep vaulted lobby roof with exposed trusswork, surrounded by lower-pitched roofs that seem to disappear behind parapet walls.

Stonework was used extensively to reinforce the sense of solidity and trust, including the large fireplace chimney in the waiting area, which is flanked by floor-to-ceiling glazing. The warm wood soffits carry through from inside to out, and clever detailing allows them to function as a sound absorber to limit reverberation in the voluminous space.

Inside, a late change from a traditional teller line to modern ITMs (interactive teller machines) created an interesting challenge for the interior design team: the potential for too much open space. By breaking down volumes, transitioning materials, and adding an inviting sitting area/check-writing stand, the team was able to create a space that looks as it was always intended to be.

A mechanical attic space was utilized to eliminate the need for unsightly exterior air handling units, and a daylit break room with covered patio area provides an enjoyable relaxation space for the employees.
