Rocking R Ranch is a beautiful lakeshore property located in Polson, Montana. Situated on 1.2 acres, the property consists of three structures: the Main House, Bunk Barn, and Toy Barn. The Main House spans approximately 4,100 sq. ft. and features an open concept design that includes a kitchen, dining room, and great room. Adjacent to the large fireplace is a screened-in covered porch providing a great outdoor experience. The house comprises three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a small office, a large mudroom, an outdoor kitchen, and a single-car garage.
The Toy Barn is situated along the lakefront and is recessed into the sloping topography, providing water-related storage and a rooftop deck area.
The Bunk Barn is located on the upper portion of the site and offers a large storage/garage area with additional living space above. The guest living space on the upper floor features a bedroom, a bathroom, and a unique built-in bunk sleeping space. The lower level is a combination of a garage, fitness room, and general storage.
Cushing Terrell was introduced to this client through a referral from one of our previous clients, for whom we also designed a lake house. The client knew where they wanted the residence situated and how they wanted it oriented. The design came down to establishing the right character and arranging the spaces. The U-shaped building placement intentionally formed a protected courtyard with views of Flathead Lake while shielding the neighbors’ houses from sight. Though they hadn’t originally planned to build the Toy Barn right away, they loved the design so much that they decided to construct it immediately.
The contemporary rustic design of Rocking R Ranch exhibits clean details paired with a rustic twist. The interior beams were reclaimed from an old trestle bridge, with visible notches that reveal the wood’s history. The Rocking R Ranch name originated from a vintage Rocking R cattle brand that the clients’ interior designer discovered in a local Montana thrift store.
