Port of Everett Waterfront Place
The Port of Everett Waterfront Place hosts several stores and restaurants, providing amenities for residents and visitors alike and creating a destination. Connecting the streetscape to the waterfront promenade, Waterfront Place provides a layer between the two, with opportunities for a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
The Waterfront Place development stemmed from the Port of Everett’s long-range plan to transform the property from strictly maritime use into a thriving mixed-use community. Cushing Terrell was engaged to activate part of the waterfront with the design of retail and restaurant spaces.
Finding inspiration in the vernacular of seaside fishing — especially the harbor’s own built environment and history — the design team helped to identify and develop the character of the new buildings at the port. Traits such as red color accents, timber framing, and outdoor connections were woven throughout the design, developing aspects that could be repeated on adjacent parcels, providing uniformity and brand identity.

The design of Waterfront Place incorporated red color accents, timber framing, and outdoor connections to create a uniformity and brand identity that could be repeated on adjacent parcels.
Throughout the design process, various challenges pushed the team to think creatively in developing solutions. Maintaining design continuity throughout the building and along the waterfront, while ensuring space for the restaurant kitchen and utility areas, was one challenge. By incorporating strategic design choices, trash and other utilities were concealed on the street side of the building, away from high-activity areas and ensuring consistency with all structural elements.
The team also integrated an existing pump house that serves as the water feature for an adjacent plaza. This was artfully executed by shrouding the structure with the same materials used on the new building, making the massing feel as if it were an extension of the new structure. Cushing Terrell used the separation between the two to help define an entry place on the street side, as well as a fireplace and outdoor dining patio on the water side.
