Port of Everett Offices + Public Restrooms
Cushing Terrell worked with the Port of Everett to design a combination of restrooms and showers with office spaces, serving both the promenade and the marina. As another part of the Port’s long-range development plan, the team built off the character of a nearby parcel with similar gabled forms, creating distinct entrances for the two user groups. This also provides ease of access from both adjacent parking and the promenade.
The project presented many challenges, including the goal of designing a building that was beautiful and functional, while maintaining public access from all sides. There was also a change in grade that the team creatively used to design a service entrance that helps screen utilities while adding to the overall landscaping. By tucking the backside of the building into the grade, its presence is lessened on the promenade side, creating a plaza and making for a very approachable and unassuming building.
The project’s success is highlighted by the ability to coalesce two separate user groups on the same site. Single-occupant shower rooms and larger restrooms are accessed on one side, while offices for users who directly serve the marina are accessed on the other. Sidewalk circulation also provides easy and logical access to each group. While their entrances are separated, the building form seamlessly ties the two together with a canopy that wraps around the building.
