On the Boards: Long Road Lodge
LOCATION
Red Lodge, MT
SIZE
3,795 sq. ft.
The Long Road Lodge will be artfully nestled into the hillside offering impressive views of Mt. Maurice and the sweeping alpine terrain just south of Red Lodge, Montana. Inspired by the bold forms of Cushing Terrell’s award-winning Cliffhanger House, the client reached out while finalizing their purchase of the six-acre site in fall 2024, drawn by the promise of tranquility in rugged south-central Montana.
This 3,795 sq. ft. mountain retreat is envisioned as both a sanctuary and a social hub. It will become an elevated basecamp for visitors of the home after carving fresh tracks down Red Lodge Mountain or wandering alpine trails in the Beartooth Mountains. With one main-level primary bedroom suite along with two guest bedrooms below, it will be a restorative backdrop for the owners and their extended families.
Generous glass openings and an expansive outdoor living area will blur the boundaries between inside and out, making the most of the east to west light and views of the landscape. Wood-clad ceilings will continue from the interior to the exterior, elongating the south-facing silhouette that first reveals itself and offers a warm welcome as one enters the property along the vehicular drive. The carefully considered drive-up approach honors the natural landscape, subtly integrating the architecture while discreetly concealing the garage entry.
Designed to accommodate the flexible demands of modern life, the home will balance the occasional remote workdays and long weekend gatherings. The client asked for a contemporary, yet deeply comfortable home — one with design gestures that blend the simplicity of geometric form with natural materiality and honest scale. The result is a design that encourages togetherness, centering shared spaces like the kitchen, dining area, and great room, which are each oriented to frame stunning vistas and invite connection. Every square foot is to be lived in and experienced.
