On the Boards: Glenns Ferry Historic Opera Theatre

Built in 1914, the Glenns Ferry Historic Opera Theatre is one of Idaho’s oldest operating theaters and is a cornerstone of community life in rural south-central Idaho. The theater has long provided affordable, family-friendly entertainment and educational opportunities hosting vaudeville acts, talent shows, workshops, and holiday events for residents and visitors alike.

Cushing Terrell contributed pro bono architectural, structural engineering, and historic preservation services to restore the theater’s missing parapet. Using original drawings, the team is helping return the façade to its historic “proto-deco” design at the same time as addressing water damage and structural concerns, while preserving the building’s character. This restoration is part of a broader effort to ensure the theater remains a vibrant, accessible cultural hub for future generations.

The project highlights the importance of historic preservation in small communities, which supports local pride and inspires further revitalization efforts in downtown Glenns Ferry. Cushing Terrell’s involvement underscores a commitment to sustain the arts and strengthen community connections through thoughtful, impactful design.

(This project) is about preserving a piece of Idaho’s living history, protecting an important structure from further damage, and continuing to grow as a welcoming, vibrant hub for both residents and travelers. We’re thrilled to be taking this next step forward and are incredibly grateful to have Cushing Terrell walking with us on this journey. With their expertise and generosity, we’re not just restoring a building, we’re restoring a legacy.
