Laramie County Community College — Flexible Industrial Technology Building

Cushing Terrell’s education design specialists were hired by Laramie County Community College (LCCC) and the State of Wyoming to provide planning, programming, and design services for their new Flexible Industrial Technology (“Flex Tech”) Building. This facility supports the mission of the college to transform student lives through the power of inspired learning. The building was designed for ultimate flexibility and growth, and promotes “learning on display” with large bays for Diesel Technology and Welding, and a flexible project display space creating a new front door to campus.

The statement courtyard creates a proper terminus at the campus’s landmark Student Mall while encouraging comfortable indoor/outdoor collaboration spaces fostering student camaraderie and academic pride. The building itself reflects meaningful aspects of the Wyoming culture and unique environment and incorporates sustainable strategies such as extensive daylighting and passive solar heating.

This project netted a 2017 AIA Montana “Excellence in Design” Citation Award, and received a Grand Prize for excellence in educational facility design in the fall 2017 edition of Learning By Design.

“[These awards are] a good indication of the quality educational environment we are creating here,” LCCC President Joe Schaffer said. “While some see the unique design that allows for flexibility, energy efficiency, and aesthetics, many of us also see the innovations this building has in how students interact, learn, and demonstrate their skills. That is what they take to the workforce, and this building is exceptional in how it helps accomplish those things.”
