Forrest M. Bird Charter School

Winner of the 2011 Montana AIA Merit Award, Forrest M. Bird (formerly Sandpoint) Charter School is a simple, flexible and collaborative environment that embodies 21st Century learning strategies. Throughout the conceptual stages of this 20,000 sq. ft., 9-12 school’s creation, multiple design charrettes were held with students, staff, and teachers to critically analyze how the current school operated, what the implications of project-based learning were, and how to solve existing problems.

The project team reinforced the need for energy efficiency, conservation, and sustainable building practices — and as a result, this project was awarded LEED Silver for Schools. It is the intention that through innovative design and environmental stewardship, the school will be used to educate future generations to think critically about both the built and natural environments.
