On the Boards: Central Montana Medical Center Helmsley Cancer Center

Central Montana Medical Center (CMMC), a 25-bed critical access hospital in Lewistown, Montana, underwent a transformative renovation and expansion. The project included a 1,000 sq. ft. renovation of the existing facility and the addition of 15,721 sq. ft. of new space, highlighted by a state-of-the-art Cancer Center and a welcoming new front entrance. It brings comprehensive cancer care to central Montana, delivering medical and oncology services to nine rural counties and filling a huge gap for nearly 50,000 residents. Patients no longer have to travel 200-plus miles for diagnoses, radiation treatments, and other services.

Cushing Terrell’s healthcare design team was tasked with revitalizing the original 1977 building, blending modern, inviting architecture with the historic character of Lewistown and the existing conditions of the hospital. The design features expansive horizontal curtain wall glazing, maintaining prairie-style architecture with long, lean, and expressive overhangs and sight lines. Material selections were carefully curated to enhance the hospital’s existing palette — elevating the original brick with new aluminum plank siding and incorporating materials that evoke the historical essence of Lewistown, such as sandstone feature walls reminiscent of those found downtown.

This thoughtful approach not only modernizes the facility but also strengthens its connection to the community, providing patients and visitors with a space that is both functional and reflective of Lewistown’s unique heritage. Learn more at CMMC’s Cancer Center capital campaign site.
