Cushing Terrell Promotes Team Members to Leadership Positions

Cushing Terrell, a multidisciplinary architecture, engineering, and interior design firm, is proud to announce the promotion of four team members to market and service-sector leadership positions.

“These individuals have extensive experience in their specific areas and beyond,” says President Greg Matthews. “With their in-depth knowledge of industry drivers, best practices, emerging trends and research, they are highly capable of driving the strategic direction of our teams and ensuring we leverage the best design solutions for our clients.”

Meet Cushing Terrell’s Newest Directors

Sheri Blattel | Retail Director and Associate Principal | Austin

With more than 30 years of experience in retail design and planning, Sheri supports a wide variety of clients, from internationally known brands to local companies. She leads a team that designs for the user experience while embodying the culture, values, and unique aesthetic of each client. “Getting to know our clients, not only their ultimate design goals, but who they are at their core, gives us the opportunity to realize this character in the physical space and create dynamic retail environments,” she says.

Sheri serves as a leadership champion working to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion within our firm and the larger AEC industry. She’s also a member of the Retail Design Institute (Atlanta Chapter), International Council of Shopping Centers, Urban Land Institute, and Shop! Association.

Karl DeCock, AIA | Healthcare Director and Associate Principal | Billings

An architect, project manager, and associate principal, Karl now adds director of healthcare design to his list of roles. He has been with Cushing Terrell for 17 years, with his primary focus being on some of the firm’s key legacy clients, including SCL Health, Billings Clinic, and Sheridan Memorial Hospital. 

With the goal of building a deep knowledge and competency base across the firm, his expertise includes vision planning, project manager development, and mentorship. In addition to supporting his team members in their professional development, he says continuous improvement is also a driver. “I’m always looking for the next thing to challenge and stretch me, both personally and professionally.” 

James Foster | Commercial Director and Associate Principal | Austin

James Foster is an architect responsible for leading Cushing Terrell’s thriving office in Austin, Texas. He has been with the firm for 16 years, with his primary focus on design and business development for the commercial, industrial, and advanced technology sectors. His passion is driving design thinking and human-centered design innovation across the firm.

Speaking to Cushing Terrell’s empathetic design philosophy, he says: “Our teams are at the forefront of design to improve people’s lives in ways that are equally committed to caring for the planet.”

Alex Russell, PE, LEED AP BD+C | Energy Services Director and Associate | Bozeman

Alex is a registered professional engineer with more than a decade of experience in all facets of HVAC mechanical design. With a passion for creating healthy, innovative environments, Alex is a LEED accredited professional in building design and construction as well as a Green Globes professional. He uses this expertise to design highly efficient, cost-effective mechanical systems that enhance comfort, wellness, and productivity. 

“The last several years continue to reinforce the fact we face mounting challenges in our built environment and aging infrastructure. I’m excited to leverage our firm’s integrated design approach and wide-ranging expertise, across multiple markets and sectors, to find solutions to meet these challenges and help create a better tomorrow.”
