Town of Carbondale Comprehensive Plan Update

Under a skyline crowned by Mount Sopris, the Town of Carbondale serves as the local heart of the Roaring Fork Valley. A quaint bedroom community with a locally-serving commercial base, Carbondale’s escalating housing costs, shifting economy, and strained mobility network threaten its diverse and family-friendly character. In mid-2021, Cushing Terrell was contracted to address these emerging challenges in a focused update to the Comprehensive Plan. With an eye toward climate action, multi-modal mobility, and services for a community of all ages and abilities, the Update will also turn the key for redevelopment opportunities in underutilized areas of the town’s core.

Cushing Terrell’s team is engaging this creative community through a tactical series of community events including the the first-ever fully Spanish-speaking open house. Leveraging the spirit of “If it can be done, it can happen in Carbondale,” the team will craft innovative recommendations that elevate Carbondale as a leader in small-town, mixed-use, creative transportation practices, age-friendly initiatives and next-generation climate policy.
