Cushing Terrell Joins MEP 2040 Commitment to Reduce Carbon Emissions

Multidisciplinary design firm, Cushing Terrell, has joined the movement to radically reduce the total carbon emissions associated with building systems.

Cushing Terrell has joined a movement led by the Carbon Leadership Forum, which calls for systems engineers and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) firms to advocate for and achieve net zero carbon in their projects, specifically operational carbon by 2030 and embodied carbon by 2040.

“The challenge demands more than vague promises by building designers to do better,” said Kate Simonen, founding director of the Carbon Leadership Forum. “It requires a set of solid commitments to take specific actions, including reducing refrigerants, requesting data from manufacturers, and becoming active participants in industry-wide efforts to decarbonize building systems.”

The MEP 2040 Commitment adds to Cushing Terrell’s previous commitments and action, such as signing on to the AIA 2030 Commitment, joining the SME Climate Hub, and establishing a dedicated sustainability service sector. With one of the largest refrigeration engineering groups in the country, the firm is known for its contributions to the design and development of low-GWP (global warming potential) refrigeration systems and is a recognized leader in alternative energy systems, such as on-site renewable energy and microgrid systems.

As a multidisciplinary design firm with experts across the design spectrum — architecture, engineering, interior design, landscape architecture, and planning — we understand we’re tasked with the creation of the built environment of tomorrow. As such, we must encourage each other, our clients, manufacturers, and construction partners to collectively utilize our knowledge and creativity to realize a healthy and thriving future.

Tim Johnson, co-director of sustainability for Cushing Terrell, said: “The tasks of our commitment will fall into the hands of our sustainability experts and embodied carbon working group collaborating with our MEP designers. Our carbon-reduction plan will evolve over time as we gain insight from implementing the actions outlined and evaluating embodied carbon in our projects. It will also evolve as the industry gains more information and insight into MEP equipment and continues to make advances in technology that will support our efforts.”
